Moving Day Prep: Stress-Reducing Advice for Students

Moving to university is the beginning of a new chapter, which is super exciting! However, moving day can also come with stresses, but there are things you can do to reduce feelings of anxiety and ensure you’re prepared.

Understand That Feeling Anxious About Moving Is Normal

University life is a whole new experience, which can create feelings of unfamiliarity. As humans, the feeling of the unknown can be nerve-wracking. Most students who move to university have never lived away from their families before. Being far from your support network of friends and family is a strange feeling but remember they’re just a phone call or a text away. The thought of making new connections can be daunting, but university will help you make friends for life.

Start Packing Early

When packing, you need to start in advance. Doing it at the last minute can heighten your stress levels and means you’re more likely to forget something important. The key to a successful move is to be organised, and you can do this by writing a list of what you need to take. Note down everything you need; you might do this in categories to help you. For example, you might section your list into toiletries, kitchen items, comforting essentials and electronics. Ask a family member that you live with to look at your list and see if they notice anything you might have forgotten. When putting your belongings in boxes, make sure you label them, as this can help you to be more organised.

Research Your New Area

If you know about the town or city you’re moving to, things can feel less anxiety inducing. A good place to start is by simply doing online research. Start by looking at what’s nearby, like the closest supermarkets and which shops and restaurants you can visit. Also look at how you can get around by researching the most convenient bus routes and walking routes. Look at your university’s website to get to know your campus better. You can also find out what societies are available and what facilities you might be unaware of. They might also have information about the local area on their site too.

As Soon As Possible After Moving

Not long after moving, there are certain things you need to organise. For example, you’ll need to register with a new GP and contact your old one to let them know you’re moving. You’ll also need to sort your bills by looking at which utilities are included in your rent, and which aren’t. Once you’ve set up the relevant accounts, note down which bills you have to pay and when they come out.

Next, do a quick safety check of your accommodation by making sure locks work and windows close properly. There should also be at least one smoke alarm on each floor as well. If something doesn’t seem right, get in touch with your landlord. It should have all been sorted before you moved in, but double-checking is always a good idea.

Settling In

Moving somewhere new can feel strange at first. Maybe you’re used to living in a small town, but you’ve moved to a big city for university. Maybe you’ve moved from a different country to go to university. It’s okay if it takes you a while to adjust to university life! It’s important to remember that it’s a big change, and you won’t necessarily settle in overnight. Making friends can take a few weeks, and getting used to academic work can be tricky too. Don’t get yourself down if it takes you a while to get used to everything; you’ll settle in eventually.
